The writer
Hello — I’m Turner, and I’m not remotely anonymous.
Writer, mother, formerly very committed to wine o’clock. Now happily, loudly, unfashionably sober.

I spent a long time believing I’d be so much happier if I could just get my act together. A better routine. A better attitude. A better version of me, arriving any day now. Meanwhile there was a glass of wine at the end of most evenings, softening the edges of a life I couldn’t quite feel.
Nothing about it looked dramatic from the outside. That’s the part nobody warns you about — how ordinary it can look while it quietly takes more than it gives.
I wasn’t looking for a better life. I was just trying to stop drinking. The better life was an accident.
When I finally put the drink down, I braced myself for a smaller life. Fewer dinners, duller evenings, a personality with the volume turned down. Instead everything got softer, funnier and more mine. Mornings became the best part of the day. I started noticing things again — light, weather, my own children’s faces.
So I started writing it down, first for myself and then in public, with my whole name attached. That’s the not-so-anonymous part. The essays became a Substack, the notes became The Becoming Journal, and the whole thing became this: a small publishing house of one, for anyone who suspects there’s something better on the other side of the glass.
No twelve steps here, no lectures, no sad-quit-lit energy. Just neuroscience, habit change, and what actually worked — passed along the way I’d tell a friend over coffee.
